A few weeks ago, at the end of May I was working I my studio, which is situated in a remote corner of a private estate. As it was warm, I had the door open and was about to start a live zoom art class.
All of a sudden, I was aware of people outside and suddenly, without warning in walked a man and a woman surprised to find an artist at work in this random location. It transpired that the night before they had left some rubbish outside and, due to ‘being a bit over’ hadn’t been able to drive back to collect it so had returned that morning to do so.
Conversation quickly turned to creativity and painting then, naturally to Hitchin Creative and its ambitions. It turned out that Ray, who owns restaurants in London, was looking for a graffiti artist to decorate his new Mexican one in Columbia Road. I offered to put a request out on Hitchin Creative Facebook page to see if we could help and within an hour had several responses.
As it happened, the particular artist I put in touch with Ray couldn’t help but he contacted a mate of his, another artist, and the project was arranged within hours.
Last week Ray wandered into my studio again to tell me how it all went. He was delighted with the artwork he commissioned and the artist, Tom Blackford. His professional approach gave Ray great confidence, the mural was made on time and to the specification of the restaurant. It is already exciting customer interest and really suits the ambience of Cheeky Chico’s.
This is a great example of how, from a random meeting, good networks and communication can result in a collaboration to create art.
